The Oldest Rose Garden …

The roses of Val de Marne in L’Haÿ les Roses

The first rose garden in France and probably the oldest in the world ! June is the season for roses and time to visit the beautiful Rosery of Val de Marne in l’Haÿ les Roses just a few kilometres from Paris. It all began in 1894 when Jules Gravereaux started his rose collection. He assembled more than 1600 varieties and more were added through hybridization. Today the rosery has more than 3300 varieties of roses. By 1899 Gravereaux created his garden with the help of Edouard André the landscape designer. The garden became a popular destination for the Parisians of the “Belle Epoque”. In 1905 Gravereaux joined the Rosati Society dedicated to the world of the Rose – encouraging cultural activities with rose-themed plays, music, ballet and opera which was then staged in the Neoclassic style theatre of the Rose built in the Rosery and animated by the most popular artists of the day. Among them was the legendary dancer Isadora Duncan, there was also the film maker Jean Cocteau, Emma Sandrini the famous ballerina of the Paris Opera, the soprano Felia Litvinne and that of Cécile Sorel the actress from the Comédie Française. Centuries have passed and the roseraie remains one of France most elegant rose garden with its geometric style blending in the horizontal and vertical shapes, delightful parterre flanked by archways, statues, pergolas, sculptures, urns and trellises. Walk along the flowery archways to reach the temples of love draped in an overflowing river of multicoloured petals and smell the sweet fragrances of the unique tea roses. The garden is set thematically around picturesque flower beds ranging from ancient roses, modern and botanical varieties to Oriental and decorative species. June is the season of the rose and so the garden blooms into a theatrical land of music and dance – so the tradition lives on … Cultural activities which include workshops and open air musical performances are regularly held at the Roseraie du Val de Marne and it usually takes place in the first and second week of June when the flowers are in full bloom.
