Samba Brazil in Paris

Brazilian Indian participating the “Lavage de la Madeleine” in Paris

Lavagem de Bonfim” the annual Afro Brazilian religious rites practiced by Candomblé devotees in Salvador Bahia arrives in Paris for the Brazil cultural festival. Celebrated last Sunday with a a spectacular march from the Place de la République to La Madeleine church for the symbolic ritual washing of its steps. A unique syncretism blending the Afro Brazilian rites brought by West African slaves with Catholic traditions. The ritual of the washing the steps of La Madeleine carried out in the Yoruba language was officiated by a Catholic priest and a pai de santo (Candomblé priest). Devotees dressed in their traditional white flowing robes carrying flowers head towards the church while singing and dancing to the sounds of mesmerizing and delirious tunes of the Batucada. Further along the parade were Samba dancers and men showing impressive Capoeira movements – Brazil most unique martial art tradition. This was a rhythmic Brazilian Sunday …
