They say that when you have visited Shwedagon Pagoda (Yangon) the Mahamuni Pagoda (Mandalay) and the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Mon state) Burma’s most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites you are blessed. Well … I have been to all three of them and the last was the most exhilarating trip. Known as the Golden Rock it is a day trip from Yangon. The several hours climb itself is very tiring but reaching the top you are fully rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding hills and the spectacular gilded rock crowned with a carved golden pagoda. Once again it is believed according to legend that the venerated rock is held in place by a strand of the Buddha’s hair …. Should you decide to come to this amazing sacred site be sure to stay overnight to get the most of the visit and experience the unique moment alongside pilgrims watching the rituals that may go on all night with chants, lightning candles, placing offerings and meditation. And like in all Burmese Buddhist temples only men are allowed to place gold leaves on the venerated Buddha … and so the inner sanctum of the rock is swarmed with male devotees each placing their gold leaves around the sacred monument while reciting mantras …
